Customer Need
Composites fabricators in a wide range of markets needed a fast mold building process that would allow them to keep up with today's constantly changing customer needs.

Key Technology Development
CCP's Innovation Team developed a new low profile tooling system that was different than other systems on the market. The new system did not require the use of fillers to reduce the weight of molds. The unfilled system also allows use of higher glass loadings and coring materials for improved strength and stiffness.

Final Product
Since the introduction of the OptiPlus® Series of tooling resins, composites fabricators have used the system to rapidly build lightweight, strong and durable molds for numerous applications including open mold lamination, closed molding and even thermoforming polycarbonate.
Customer Need
Changes in fire protection regulations are driving architectural and commercial transit fabricators to look for alternative flame retardant resins and gel coats. To meet the regulations, these alternate products need to have lower toxicity and lower smoke generation.

Key Technology Development
Working in cooperation with CCP's European resins group and Cray Valley, CCP's Innovation Team developed a new innovative, intumescent material. The ability to use charring (intumescence) to prevent fire from spreading is a well-known technology in paints and coatings, but had not been available in composites products.

Final Product
The FIREBLOCK product line was introduced into the Composites Market in 2010. This family of intumescent products includes laminating, closed molding and pultrusion products as well as a gel coat for use as an in-mold coating.

FIREBLOCK products are being recommended for use in Disney theme parks and are being used in architectural applications requiring ASTM E84 Class 1 and transportation applications requiring Docket 90 approval.

FIREBLOCK technology also recently won the JEC 2011 innovation award for materials.
Customer Need
While MACT compliant dark colored gel coat products are in use and performing acceptably in many applications, some fabricators have not converted to these products due to application and performance trade-offs in comparison to non-MACT compliant products. These performance trade-offs include lightening and dulling of dark colors upon sanding and buffing; limitations on matching deep, rich colors; and blushing upon water and chemical exposure.

Key Technology Development
CCP's Innovation Team created a breakthrough technology that was used to formulate a new polymer coating for deep, rich colors.

Final Product
IMEDGE® technology addresses the performance trade-offs typically associated with MACT compliant, dark color gel coats. It is easily applied, can be repaired and buffed without dulling, is available in deep, rich colors and is resistant to blushing. Since its introduction, IMEDGE® PCT100 has been used successfully in a wide range of composites products including tractor parts, swimming pools and boats.
